Have you ever heard the saying it took 10 years to become an overnight success?
Rome wasn’t built in a day, Edsion had over 10,000 attempts at the light bulb, Colonel Sanders heard 1009 no’s before he got a yes – the list of patient and persisent people throughout history is enormous and highlights three great lessons we can learn from:
1. Patience
When we run our own businesses we devour motivational books, seminars, webinars, teleseminars, coaching programs, free articles, audio programs etc with enthusiasm, hope and trust that something we hear, read or try will be the one action that makes a difference and catapults us into the success stratosphere that we desire.
What we often forget is to have a good dose of patience, trust and belief that we are heading in the right direction, doing the right activities and when the timing and circumstances are right we will get what we really want.
As long as we are doing the right activities, learning from our mistakes, correctling them along the way we will get to that critical point of being where we want to be.
Here is a great definition of patience that we like and believe sums up being patient -
“an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay” from dictionary.com
Delays are often hidden gifts that give us time to explore the facts of a situation or the opportunity to look at our situation from another point of view. If you are experiencing impatience in your business try looking at it from another point of view – ask a friend or business buddy to help often another setr of eyes can see objectively.
2. Persistence
Just where would Colonel Sanders and Edison’s ideas be today if they had not been persistent? Persistence is an exceptional quality to engender in your daily business activities but persistence must also come with evaluation and assessment. I love the saying ‘do what you have always done – get what you have always gotten’ it’s a great reminder that persistence needs to be assessed, if your approach is not working try another way but don’t give up!
I see this a lot, business owners will invest in a new marketing strategy and when it doesn’t give an immediate result they throw it out (or worse give up) and start something entirely new instead of adjusting their original concept, tweeking it and seeing how many other ways it could be done until they get their desired results. At Accelerate Women we live by the mantra “what works, what doesn’t, what can we improve?”
I take off my hat to Edison, he tried 10,000 different ways until he got a positive result, how many ways are you willing to try?
3. Timing
Timing is everything! I cannot think of a better example than Australian speed ice skater Steven Bradbury when he created history in Salt Lake City when he became the first Australian to win a Winter Olympic Gold Medal. Bradbury competed at four Winter Olympic Games spanning 12 years before circumstances and timing were right for him to win gold. Some describe Bradbury’s victory as lucky, but had he not been persistent and patient the timing and opportunity may never have appeared.
You really have to be in it to win it and the Steven Bradbury example is a great lesson for us all if we are patient the timing and opportunity will appear. All we have to do is do what we do best, persist in our endevours, adjust along the way and stratospheric success can be ours as well.
I’d love to hear your stories of persistence, patience and timing…
Until next time, stay patient
